Power Transfer Unit (Service Information): Installation

NOTE:

One speed shown in illustration, two speed similar.

  1. If manual transmission equipped, install a NEW  O-ring in the groove around the outside of the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) input shaft housing.
  2. Tip the right side upward and into the gap over the suspension cradle and align the PTU with the transmission output shaft.

  3. Install the PTU (1) to the transmission and engage the spline shaft into the transmission output shaft adapter.

  4. Install the fasteners (1) to hold the PTU (2) to the transmission and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Connect the wire harness connector to the actuator.

    NOTE:

    The PTU to block bracket has a sleeve that slides in the bracket, if the sleeve is seized in the bracket, the bracket must be replaced. 

  6. Place the PTU support bracket (2) in position on the PTU (5).
  7. Install the fasteners (4) to hold the PTU mount bracket (2) to the engine block (3) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  8. Install the fasteners (2) to hold the PTU support bracket (1) to the PTU and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  9. Verify that the PTU is filled to the specified fluid level. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

  10. Place the heat shield (1) in position on the PTU.
  11. Install the fasteners (2) to hold the heat shield (1) to the PTU and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  12. Install the exhaust crossunder pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, INSTALLATION .
  13. If equipped with a 3.2L, place the rear catalytic converter in position on the cylinder head.
  14. Install the fasteners holding the rear catalytic converter to the cylinder head and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to (TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  ).
  15. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  16. If equipped with a 2.4L, install the intake manifold. Refer to INSTALLATION .
    NOTE:

    The right halfshaft passes through multiple seals in manual transmission equipped vehicles, use care when installing the halfshaft. 

  17. Install the right front halfshaft. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  18. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector to the negative battery cable.
  20. Verify that the transmission is filled to the specified fluid level. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  21. Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
