Steering System: Column: Installation
- Install the gap hider to the steering column.
- If equipped, install the Electric Steering Lock (ESL) module. Refer to MODULE, ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK (ESL), INSTALLATION .
- Connect the ESL module wire harness connector, then raise the column onto the mounting studs and install the two steering column mounting nuts (2) to the studs and install the two steering column mounting bolts (1).NOTE:
Verify that the tilt lever is in the unlocked position prior to tightening the steering column fasteners.
- Tighten two steering column mounting nuts (2) and the two steering column mounting bolts (1) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.NOTE:
A NEW intermediate shaft coupling bolt (3) must be installed every time the pinch bolt is removed.
- Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
- Slide the intermediate shaft (1) onto the steering gear pinion shaft (2).
- Install a NEW intermediate shaft coupling bolt (3) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Confirm that:
- The front wheels are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
- The turn signal stalk is in the NEUTRAL position.
- Secure the wire harness routing clip (1).
- Install the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM). Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN CONTROL (SCCM), INSTALLATION .
- Install the knee blocker air bag, if equipped. Refer to AIR BAG, KNEE BLOCKER, INSTALLATION .
- Install the driver air bag. Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, INSTALLATION

- Install the gap hider screws (1), (2).
- Install the steering column opening cover. Refer to COVER, STEERING COLUMN OPENING, INSTALLATION .
- Install the lower shroud from the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, INSTALLATION .
- Install the upper shroud from the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, INSTALLATION .
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, INSTALLATION .
- Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
- Perform vehicle trim procedure. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Road test the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the steering system.
