Battery Disconnection And Connection
The following procedure is the direct way to disconnect and isolate the batteries for vehicles equipped with 2.4L engine with Electric Start/Stop (ESS). The supplemental battery will also be disconnected in this procedure to help isolate the 12 volt battery system.
If the battery negative cables are not isolated it will result in the system still having battery connection and a potential power spike or power of the system and can cause damage electrical components or deployment of the air bags.
DISCONNECTION
- Disconnect the electrical connection (2) from the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) and set it aside.
- Remove the nut (1) from the negative battery cable.NOTE:
For vehicles outside of the NAFTA market, there will be a negative pole with a RADSOK connection for the Negative cable. You will need to remove that first to disconnect the main battery negative connection.
- Remove the main battery cable (1), isolate and position aside so that it will not make contact with the negative post for the IBS.
- Remove the nut (1) from the supplemental negative battery cable and isolate the cable.NOTE:
Verify the position of the battery cable so that it will not make contact with the negative post on the supplemental battery.
- Remove the nut (1) from the positive cables for the supplemental battery and isolate both cables.NOTE:
Take caution as to not touch the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) bracket (1) while any of the battery system cables are connected. Damage to electrical components will occur if the bracket is touched with the positive cable when the supplemental battery and main battery negative cables are not isolated.
- Once the cables are all disconnected and isolated, verify they are positioned out of the way that they will not touch any of the battery posts. Take caution that the cables (2 & 5) DO NOT touch the PCM bracket (1) while the battery is disconnected (incase the negative cables come in contact with either of the negative posts). Verify that cables (3 & 4) DO NOT come in contact with the negative posts for the main battery or the supplemental battery.
CONNECTION
- At the supplemental battery, position both positive cables and install the nut (2) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .NOTE:
Take caution that you
DO NOT
contact the PCM bracket while tightening the positive cables to the supplemental battery.
- At the supplemental battery, position the negative cable to the negative post and install the nut (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- At the main battery, position the negative cable and install the nut (1) and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the IBS wire harness connector (2).
- Test the vehicle for proper operation.
