Removal And Installation: Removal

WARNING:

Before servicing the steering column the airbag system must be disarmed. Failure to do so may result in accidental deployment of the airbag and possible personal injury.

WARNING:

When an undeployed airbag module is to be removed from the vehicle, first disconnect the battery ground cable and isolate it. Allow the system capacitor to discharge for a minimum of two minutes before starting any removal.

NOTE:

In case of replacing steering column, connect the diagnostic tool to initialize the steering angle sensor.

NOTE:

Position the front wheels straight, enter the first lock steering to the right and remove the ignition key.

NOTE:

Keep the steering column adjustment lever locked during all phases of removal and installation.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering column opening cover. Refer to COVER, STEERING COLUMN OPENING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. Remove the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM). Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN CONTROL (SCCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  4. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt (1), and remove the intermediate shaft (2) from the steering gear.
  5. Disconnect the two Electric Power Steering (EPS) module electrical connectors.

  6. Remove the two front steering column bolts (2).
  7. Remove the two rear steering column nuts (1), and remove the steering column (3).
