Housing, Steering Column Bearing: Removal

NOTE:

Specific instructions must be followed when putting the steering column bearing together with the steering column bearing housing.

  1. Inhibit rotation of the steering column with adhesive tape/or strap.
  2. From the engine compartment, remove the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt (3).
  3. Separate the lower intermediate shaft coupler (2) from the shaft (1).

  4. If equipped, remove the push in retainers (1) and remove the lower panel (2) below the steering column.

  5. Remove the pinch bolt (1) from the upper intermediate shaft coupler (2) at the column.
  6. Separate the shaft from the column.
    NOTE:

    Do not use any type of grease on the shaft and bushing. 

  7. Apply soapy water to the shaft and bushing to ease removal process in the following step.
  8. Tilt the coupler and shaft down just enough to carefully pull the shaft from the steering column shaft bearing and housing at the cowl.

  9. Cut and pull back the insulation from around the steering column bearing housing (1) as necessary for access then remove the three bolts (2).
  10. Using a common hook tool, remove the housing (1) from the cowl panel.
