Module, Fuel Pump: Operation
An electric fuel pump is part of the fuel pump module. The electric fuel pump is a positive displacement. The immersible pump has a permanent magnet electric motor capable of creating 860 kPa (125 psi) of operating pressure. The fuel pressure regulator limits fuel pressure to 400 kPa (58 psi).
The fuel tank sending unit is continually monitored by the Body Control Module (BCM), to determine the fuel level. This information is available to other vehicle control modules via the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus. Fuel level sensor diagnosis is conducted as part of the BCM circuitry.
The fuel gauge is controlled by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) circuit board based upon IPC programming and a CAN bus input received from the BCM.
