Theory Of Operation
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is able to detect an engine stall event after the engine is started and certain parameters are met. The PCM will set a DTC but will not set the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). This allows the PCM to retain engine data from the time of the event. The DTC and saved data serves two purposes:
- For technicians the DTC verifies that there was a stall event that was not related to an ESS system Auto-stop issue. The data saved with the DTC can be used along with any other PCM related DTCs to attempt to narrow down which system or components to focus on when diagnosing the stall event.
- The data is automatically uploaded to an FCA database. Engineering is able to review this data to help in determining the issues that are causing the stall events and possibly aid in finding a root cause and solution. If a solution is determined for the issue, likely a Service Bulletin or Star On-line Case will be provided describing the issue, possible related symptoms and repair action.
