Ignition Timing

NOTE: Ignition timing is not adjustable. The following procedure is for checking timing only.
  1. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Turn off all accessories. On 1.8L, remove inspection plug in plastic coil cover or remove plastic coil cover. Connect inductive timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Start engine and allow it to idle. Ensure idle speed is within specifications. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS  table under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE. Check ignition timing. Timing mark on crankshaft pulley and mark on timing belt cover should be aligned to specification. See BASE IGNITION TIMING  table.
  2. If timing is not within specification, check for faulty sensor or incorrect camshaft timing. Check power and grounds. If camshaft timing, sensors, power and grounds are okay, replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
