Armature Test

  1. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between commutator and core. See Fig 1 . If continuity exists, replace armature.
  2. Check continuity between commutator and shaft. See Fig 2 . If continuity exists, replace armature.
  3. Place armature on "V" blocks. Using a dial indicator, measure runout at commutator. If runout is not within specification, repair armature with a lathe or replace armature. See Fig 3 .
  4. Measure diameter of commutator. See Fig 4 . Replace armature if diameter of commutator is at, or less than, grind limit. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. If commutator surface is dirty, wipe it with a cloth; if it is rough, repair it with a lathe or fine sandpaper.
  6. Check depth of mold between commutator segments. Replace armature if depth of mold is at, or less than minimum. See Fig 5 . See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS  .
