Evaporative Emission Control System

This system prevents fuel vapour from reaching atmosphere. The system consists of a fuel expansion tank located between inner right hand body side and rear right hand fender, and an adsorption canister located in engine compartment attached to front right hand valance.

When fuel expands in fuel tank due to temperature increase it is vented into bottom of expansion tank, any liquid fuel can be siphoned back into main tank. Fuel vapour is directed as fuel cools through outlet pipe at top of expansion tank to adsorption (charcoal) canister by means of a pipe running along underside of vehicle.

A restrictor located in purge line at plenum chamber controls purge line flow. The adsorption canister containing activated charcoal is used to store fuel vapour from fuel tank. Filter pads are fitted above and below charcoal to prevent ingress of foreign matter of charcoal into purge line. Emissions from fuel tank enter top of canister and purging air enters at bottom. The canister is purged of its vapours by vacuum generated within plenum chamber, vapour is drawn into plenum chamber and burnt with in-going mixture. See Fig 1 .
