Catalytic CONVERTORS

Three catalytic convertors are fitted into exhaust system to reduce carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbon emissions. The two down pipes from exhaust manifolds each house an oxygen sensor located forward of catalytic convertors.

The active constituents of catalytic device are platinum and rhodium. In order for device to function correctly, it is necessary to control very closely oxygen concentration in exhaust gas entering catalyst. This is achieved by use of a fuel control system which continuously monitors oxygen content of exhaust gas by means of oxygen sensor and adjusts mixture level to obtain required oxygen content.

Unleaded fuel must be used on catalyst equipped vehicles, and labels to indicate this are displayed on instrument panel and inside fuel filler flap. The filler neck is designed to accommodate unleaded fuel pump nozzles only. The emission control system fitted to this engine is designed to keep emissions within legislated limits, providing engine is correctly maintained and is in sound mechanical condition.
