Repair and Diagnosis: Electrical: Starters: Testing: Solenoid

Check continuity and resistance value of solenoid windings by connecting an ohmmeter. See Fig 1 . Resistance should be 1.039-1.119 ohms. If test results are unsatisfactory replace the solenoid.

If results are correct proceed with testing the contacts by connecting an ohmmeter as shown. See Fig 2 . Resistance should be .283-.313 ohms. If test results are unsatisfactory replace the solenoid.

With solenoid plunger removed, ohmmeter should read infinity. See Fig 3 .With solenoid plunger operated by hand, ohmmeter should read zero. If test results are unsatisfactory, replace the solenoid. If results are correct proceed with testing operation of spring for freedom of movement.
