Traction Control: Anti-Lock: Description

The brake system is hydraulically power assisted with an integrated, electronically controlled 4-channel Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) system. The ABS is designed to prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking. This allows driver to maintain vehicle steering control and stability. ABS system consists of a brake booster/ABS modulator unit, power unit (accumulator, pump and motor), ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU), front and rear wheel speed sensors and exciter rings, Pressure Conscious Reducing Valve (PCRV), relays and wiring harness. See Fig 1 .

Electronic Traction Control (ETC) is standard on all vehicles from MY 1999 onwards. ETC works in conjunction with ABS system to provide traction on slippery surfaces. ETC provides braking to the spinning wheel which transfers torque to remaining wheels. When ETC is operating, the TC indicator light in instrument panel will light for a minimum of 2 seconds and a warning beep will sound. ETC operates automatically and will switch itself off at speeds more than 62 MPH. ETC may be disabled if necessary, such as when testing vehicle on a dynamometer. See DISABLING ELECTRONIC TRACTION CONTROL (ETC)  under SERVICING.

NOTE: For more information on brake system, see DISC article.
