Description & Operation

The steering column assembly consists of a upper steering column and a lower intermediate shaft. See Fig 1. The intermediate shaft is designed to prevent the upper steering column from moving towards the driver during a frontal impact. The intermediate shaft includes a compression joint with a Red indicator clip. The Red indicator clip is used to determine extent of steering column collapse after a collision impact. If Red indicator clip is not present or is not fully seated against the clamp plate, the steering column and intermediate shaft assembly must be replaced.

On Range Rover, the steering system incorporates an adjustable steering column that has 5 tilt positions and 2.5" (64 mm) of axial movement.
