Steering Column Assembly: Removal

NOTE:
  • If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch ON, DTCs will be recorded.
  • When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  2. FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  3. REMOVE SWITCH AND VOLUME CASE 
    1. Apply protective tape to the steering wheel boss cover lower as shown in the illustration.
    2. Using a screwdriver, detach the 3 claws and remove the case.

      HINT:

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

  4. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR 
    1. Remove the 2 screws.
    2. Remove the modulator and then disconnect the connector.

  5. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER 
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the cover.
  6. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD ASSEMBLY 
    NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.
    1. Using a T30 "TORX" socket wrench, loosen the 2 "TORX" screws until the groove along the screw circumference is caught on the screw case.

    2. Pull the steering wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connectors.
    3. Disconnect the terminal.
      NOTE: When removing the steering wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.
      CAUTION:
      • When placing the steering wheel pad down, make sure the outer surface of the steering wheel pad faces upward.
      • Never disassemble the steering wheel pad.

  7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    2. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
    3. Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

      SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)

  8. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER 
    1. Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover lower.
  10. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER 
  11. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  12. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  13. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  14. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LOWER (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  15. REMOVE NO. 4 HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT 
    1. Remove the 3 clips and duct.
  16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Place matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
    2. Loosen the bolt labeled A, remove the bolt labeled B and disconnect the steering sliding yoke.
    3. Disconnect the connectors.
    4. Remove the brake pedal return spring.

    5. Loosen the hole cover clamp.
    6. Remove the 2 column set bolts, 2 column set nuts and steering column.
  17. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt labeled A and steering sliding yoke.
