Automatic Transmission Assembly: Removal

  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  3. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  4. DISCONNECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (for Sensor 2) 
    1. Disconnect the sensor (see REMOVAL ).
  5. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR CENTER BRACE 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and brace.
  6. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  7. REMOVE CENTER EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  8. REMOVE NO. 1 EXHAUST PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and bracket.
  9. REMOVE TWC (See  REMOVAL  ) 
  10. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR NO. 1 HEAT INSULATOR 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and heat insulator.

  11. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE HEAT INSULATOR 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and heat insulator.
  12. REMOVE PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the propeller with center bearing shaft assembly (see REMOVAL ).
  13. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.

      Torque: 20 N*m (205 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  14. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.

    2. Loosen the union nut and disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube.

    3. Loosen the union nut and disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube.

  15. DISCONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the nut and disconnect the floor shift gear shifting rod.

  16. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Support the automatic transmission with a transmission jack.

  17. REMOVE REAR ENGINE MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and rear engine mounting member.

    2. Remove the 4 nuts and rear engine mounting member.

  18. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Tilt down the automatic transmission.
      NOTE:
      • Slowly tilt the transmission downward so that the wire harness can be disconnected.
      • Take care so that the cooling fan does not come into contact with the fan shroud.

    2. Remove the 5 bolts and wire harness clamps.

      HINT:

      Bolt (A) is tightened to the transmission housing.

    3. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    4. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    5. Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.
    6. Disconnect the wire harness from the automatic transmission.

  19. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and flywheel housing under cover.

  20. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.
    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and remove the 6 bolts.

    3. Remove the 9 bolts.
    4. Separate and remove the automatic transmission.

  21. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and engine rear mounting insulator.

  22. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Remove the nut and transmission control shaft lever RH.

  23. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Put matchmarks on the transmission case and torque converter clutch.
    2. Remove the torque converter clutch from the automatic transmission.
