Inspection Procedure

  1. CHECK OPERATION OF ENGINE CRANKING 
    1. When turning the ignition switch to the START position, check if the starter motor starts.

    OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 

    NG: Go to Next Step 

  2. READ VALUE OF TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Enter the following menu: Powertrain/Engine and ECT/Data List/Starter Signal.
    3. Confirm the starter signal status when the ignition switch is operated.

      OK 

      IGNITION SWITCH POSITION

      Ignition Switch Position Starter Signal
      ON OFF
      Start ON

    OK: Go to step  5

    NG: Go to Next Step 

  3. INSPECT ECM (STA AND STSW VOLTAGE) 
    1. Measure the voltage of the E7 ECM connector while cranking the engine (ignition switch is in the START position).

      Standard voltage 

      STANDARD VOLTAGE

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      STA (E7-11) - E1 (E7-1) 9 to 14 V
      STSW (E7-12) - E1 (E7-1)

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

    B: REPLACE ECM 

    C: Go to step  9

    A: Go to Next Step 

  4. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH 
    1. Disconnect the P1 park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance between each terminal shown below when the shift lever is moved to each position.

      Standard resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE

      Shift Position Tester Connection Specified Condition
      P 2 - 6, 4 - 5 Below 1 Ω
      R 1 - 2
      N 2 - 9, 4 - 5
      D 2 - 7
      2 2 - 3
      L 2 - 8
    3. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH 

    OK: CHECK AND REPAIR HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - ECM) 

  5. INSPECT STARTER RELAY 
    1. Remove the starter relay from the engine room R/B
    2. Measure the resistance of the starter relay.

      Standard resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      3-5 10 kΩ or higher
      3-5 Below 1 Ω (when battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2)
    3. Reinstall the starter relay.

    NG: REPLACE STARTER RELAY

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - STARTER RELAY, STARTER RELAY - BODY GROUND) 
    1. Check the harness and the connector between the park/neutral position switch connector and the starter relay.
      1. Disconnect the P1 park/neutral position switch connector.
      2. Remove the starter relay from the engine room R/B.
      3. Measure the resistance between the wire harness side connectors.

        Standard resistance (Check for open) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE

        Tester Connection Specified Condition
        Park/Neutral position switch (P1-5) - Starter relay (2) Below 1 Ω

        Standard resistance (Check for short) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE

        Tester Connection Specified Condition
        Park/Neutral position switch (P1-5) or Starter relay (2) Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      4. Reinstall the starter relay.
      5. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch.
    2. Check the harness and the connector between the starter relay and the body ground.
      1. Remove the starter relay from the engine room R/B.
      2. Measure the resistance between the starter relay and the body ground.

        Standard resistance (Check for open) 

        STANDARD RESISTANCE

        Tester Connection Specified Condition
        Starter relay (1) - Body ground Below 1 Ω

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  7. INSPECT ENGINE ROOM RELAY BLOCK (STARTER RELAY VOLTAGE) 
    1. Remove the Starter relay from the engine room R/B.
    2. Measure the voltage of the engine room R/B and body ground.

      Standard voltage 

      STANDARD VOLTAGE

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      Engine room R/B (Starter relay terminal 5) - Body ground 9 to 14 V
    3. Reinstall the Starter relay.

    NG: CHECK AND REPAIR HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (STARTER RELAY - BATTERY)

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  8. INSPECT STARTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the starter assembly (See INSPECTION ).

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE STARTER ASSEMBLY 

    OK: CHECK AND REPAIR HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (STARTER RELAY - STARTER, STARTER BATTERY) 

  9. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the lower finish panel.
    2. Disconnect the 118 ignition switch connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the connector terminals shown in the chart below.

      Standard resistance 

      STANDARD RESISTANCE

      Switch Position Tester Connection Specified Condition
      LOCK All terminals 10 kΩ or higher
      ACC 2-3 Below 1 Ω
      ON 2-3 2 - 4, 6 - 7
      START 1 - 2, 2 - 4 6 - 7, 7 - 8
    4. Reconnect the 118 ignition switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

    OK: CHECK AND REPAIR HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ECM - IGNITION SWITCH, IGNITION SWITCH BATTERY)
