Fail-Safe Chart

If any of the following DTCs are set, the ECM enters fail-safe mode to allow the vehicle to be driven temporarily

  • Power to camshaft timing control motor is cut

P0011, P0012, P0021, P0022 VVT system circuit
  • Idle speed is increased (misfire prevention), or power to camshaft timing control motor is cut
  • Valve timing of bank that is operating normally is fixed at maximum retard angle
 Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off
P0015, P0025 Exhaust camshaft oil control valve Idle speed is increased Pass condition detected
P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019 Valve timing deviation
  • Power to camshaft timing control motor is cut
  • Valve timing of bank that is operating normally is fixed at maximum retard angle
 Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off
P0031, P0032, P0051, P0052 Air fuel ratio sensor heater ECM turns off air fuel ratio sensor heater Engine switch off

P0087, P0088 Fuel pump for high pressure
  • Fuel pump for high pressure is stopped
  • Engine speed is limited to 2000 rpm or less

P0102, P0103 Mass air flow meter ECM calculates ignition timing according to engine speed and throttle valve position Pass condition detected
P0112, P0113 Intake air temperature sensor ECM estimates intake air temperature to be 20°C (68°F) Pass condition detected
P0115, P0117, P0118 Engine coolant temperature sensor ECM estimates engine coolant temperature to be 80°C (176°F) Pass condition detected
P0120, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0220, P0222, P0223, P0604, P0606, P0607, P060A, P060B, P060D, P060E, P0657, P2102, P2103, P2111, P2112, P2118, P2119, P2135 Electronic throttle control system ECM cuts off throttle actuator current and throttle valve returns to 7° throttle position by return spring ECM then adjusts engine output by controlling fuel injection (intermittent fuel cut) and ignition timing in accordance with accelerator pedal opening angle to allow vehicle to continue at minimal speed(1) Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off
P0171, P0172, P0174, P0175 Fuel trim Air fuel ratio feedback control is stopped Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off
P0190, P0192, P0193 Fuel pressure sensor
  • Fuel pump for high pressure is stopped
  • Engine speed is limited to 2000 rpm or less
 Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off
P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0207, P0208 Injector driver (EDU)
  • Fuel injection for abnormal cylinder and related other cylinders is stopped
  • Engine speed is limited to 3000 rpm or less
 Engine switch turned off
P062D, P062E Injector driver (EDU) INJ (INJ2) relay is shut off Engine switch turned off
P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and P0308(2) -
  • During high load and high engine speed (MIL is blinking)
    • Throttle valve opening angle control is performed

P2120, P2121, P2122, P2123, P2125, P2127, P2128, P2138 Accelerator pedal position sensor Accelerator pedal position sensor has 2 sensor circuits Main and Sub If either of the circuits malfunctions, ECM controls engine using the other circuit If both of the circuits malfunction, ECM regards accelerator pedal as being released As a result, throttle valve is closed and engine idles Pass condition detected and then engine switch turned off
(1) The vehicle can be driven slowly when the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and slowly. If the accelerator pedal is depressed quickly, the vehicle may speed up and slow down erratically.
(2) Misfire related fail-safe operations occur when malfunctions occur that cause the catalysts to overheat.
