Inspection Procedure
HINT:
- The following troubleshooting flowchart is based on the premise that the engine is cranked normally. If the engine will not crank, proceed to the Problem Symptoms Table (See PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE ).
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Starter Signal.
- Check the value displayed on the Techstream when the engine switch is turned to the START positions.
OK
DATA LISTEngine Switch Position Starter Signal On (IG) OFF START ON NG: Go to step 2
OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS (See CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS )
- INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the C19 PNP switch connector.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance
TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHARTTester Connection Condition Specified Condition 4 (B) - 5 (L) Shift lever in P Below 1 Ω Shift lever in N Below 1 Ω Shift lever not in P and N 10 kΩ or higher NG: REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION )

OK: Go to next step
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PNP SWITCH - ECM)
- Disconnect the C19 PNP switch connector.
- Disconnect the A38 ECM connector.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance
TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHARTTester Connection Condition Specified Condition C19-5 - A38-46 (STA) Always Below 1 Ω C19-5 or A38-46 (STA) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
