Automatic Transmission Assembly: Installation

  1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the torque converter clutch (see TORQUE CONVERTER AND DRIVE PLATE  ).
  2. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. While aligning the matchmarks on the transmission case and torque converter clutch, engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.

    2. Engage the splines of the stator shaft and stator while turning the torque converter clutch.

      HINT:

      Turn the torque converter clutch approximately 180°.

    3. Turn the torque converter clutch and align the matchmarks on the torque converter clutch and transmission case to engage the key of the oil pump drive gear into the slot on the torque converter clutch.
      NOTE: Do not push on the torque converter when aligning the matchmarks.

    4. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension A between the transmission and the end surface of the drive plate.

    5. Using a caliper and straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration. Check that B is greater than A.

      Standard dimension: A + 1 mm (0.039 in.) or more

  3. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Install the transmission control shaft lever RH with the nut.

      Torque: 16 N*m (160 kgf*cm, 12 ft.*lbf)

  4. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the mounting insulator with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 12 N*m (122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf)

  5. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the automatic transmission to the engine with the 9 bolts.

      Torque: 37 N*m (377 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) for bolt A 

      71 N*m (724 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf) for bolt B 

      HINT:

      • Make sure that the mark is positioned as shown in the illustration.
      • Bolt head size: 14 mm for bolt A 17 mm for bolt B
      • Bolt (B) will be installed with the wire harness clamp in a later step.

    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and install the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.

      Torque: 48 N*m (489 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      First install the black colored bolt and then the remaining 5 bolts.

  6. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Install the fly wheel housing under cover with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 18 N*m (184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf) 

  7. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Connect the 2 speed sensor connectors.
    2. Connect the transmission wire connector.
    3. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.

    4. Install the wire harness clamps with the 5 bolts.

      Torque: 71 N*m (724 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf) for bolt A 

      10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) for bolt B 

      HINT:

      Bolt (A) is tightened to the transmission housing.

  8. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Install the rear engine mounting member with the 4 nuts.

      Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)

    2. Install the rear engine mounting member with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)

  9. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Connect the floor shift gear shifting rod with the nut.

      Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) 

  10. INSTALL OIL COOLER TUBE 
    1. Temporarily install the oil cooler outlet tube.
    2. Temporarily install the oil cooler inlet tube.
    3. Install the 3 clamps with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf)

    4. Using a union nut wrench, tighten the oil cooler outlet tube.

      Torque: 44 N*m (449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) for use without SST 

      39 N*m (398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf) for use with SST 

      HINT:

      Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 460 mm (18.11 in.).

    5. Using union nut wrench, tighten the oil cooler inlet tube.

      Torque: 44 N*m (449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) for use without union nut wrench 

      39 N*m (398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf) for use with union nut wrench 

      HINT:

      Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 460 mm (18.11 in.)

  11. INSTALL PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the propeller with center bearing shaft assembly (see INSTALLATION ).
  12. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE CABLE HEAT INSULATOR 
    1. Install the heat insulator with the 4 bolts.
  13. INSTALL FRONT FLOOR NO. 1 HEAT INSULATOR 
    1. Install the heat insulator with the 4 bolts.
  14. INSTALL TWC  (See INSTALLATION )
  15. INSTALL NO. 1 EXHAUST PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the bracket with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 43 N*m (438 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) 

  16. INSTALL CENTER EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  17. INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )

  18. INSTALL FRONT FLOOR CENTER BRACE 
    1. Install the brace with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) 

  19. CONNECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR 

    Torque: 39 N*m (398 kgf*cm, 29 ft.*lbf) for use with SST 

    44 N*m (449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) for use without SST 

    HINT:

    Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 460 mm (18.11 in)

  20. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
  21. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION 
    1. Adjust the shift lever position (see ADJUSTMENT  ).
  22. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION 
    1. Inspect the shift lever position (see ADJUSTMENT  ).
  23. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 

    Fluid type: 

    Toyota Genuine ATF WS 

  24. ADJUST AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Adjust the amount of automatic transmission fluid (see AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID  ).
  25. INSTALL NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  26. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  27. PERFORM INITIALIZATION 
    1. Perform initialization (see INITIALIZATION ).
      NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
