System Outline
The dynamic radar cruise control system allows the vehicle to follow a vehicle ahead at a safe distance by detecting the vehicle ahead and the driving lane using a combination of a millimeter wave radar, yaw rate sensor and steering sensor.
Control Function Outline
- Setting
When driving with the ON-OFF switch ON (The power indicator is lit), if the - SET switch is pressed while the vehicle speed is above the lower settable speed limit, the cruise control will activate, using the vehicle speed at the time the switch is released as the set speed. If however the switch is pressed at a speed higher than the higher limit vehicle speed for setting, the control starts, taking the higher limit speed as set speed.
- Changing Method of the Set Speed
<In vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode>
- How to lower the set speed
* While driving with the cruise control active, pressing and holding the - SET switch will gradually and continuously decelerate the vehicle as long as the switch is held down. The vehicle speed at the point at which the switch is released will be stored in the memory as the set speed and the vehicle is maintained at that speed.
- How to raise the set speed
* While driving with the cruise control active, pressing and holding the + RES switch will gradually and continuously accelerate the vehicle as long as the switch is held down. The vehicle speed at the point at which the switch is released will be stored in the memory as the set speed and the vehicle is maintained at that speed.
* If the vehicle speed exceeds the higher settable speed limit while the + RES switch is being held down, the vehicle is maintained at the higher settable speed limit while the switch is held down and when it is released the high speed limit will be stored in the memory as the set speed and the vehicle is maintained at that speed.
* If the + RES switch is held down while the follow-up control is in operation, the vehicle speed will not be raised but instead the follow-up control will continue at the current speed. However, the set speed will be gradually raised in 5 mph steps on vehicles for the U.S.A. and 5 km/h steps on those for Canada steps as long as the switch is held down.
<in constant speed control mode>
- Deceleration
* While driving with the cruise control active, pressing and holding the - SET switch will gradually and continuously decelerate the vehicle as long as the switch is held down. The vehicle speed at the point at which the switch is released will be stored in the memory as the set speed and the vehicle is maintained at that speed. If the vehicle speed rises above the higher settable speed limit when the - SET switch is released, such as when driving downhill, the higher limit speed will be stored in the memory as the set speed and the vehicle is maintained at that speed.
* If the - SET switch is operated momentarily (Approx. 0.5 sec.), the set speed is decelerated in 1.6 km/h (1 mph) steps every time the switch is pressed. Please note that if the switch is pressed when the set speed differs from vehicle speed by 5 km/h or more, the vehicle is controlled with the speed at the point at which the switch is released as the set speed.
- Acceleration
* While driving with the cruise control active, pressing and holding the + RES switch will gradually and continuously accelerate the vehicle as long as the switch is held down. The vehicle speed at the point at which the switch is released will be stored in the memory as the set speed and the vehicle is maintained at that speed. If the vehicle speed exceeds the higher settable speed limit while the + RES switch is being held down, the vehicle is maintained at the higher settable speed limit while the switch is held down and when it is released the high speed limit will be stored in the memory as the set speed and the vehicle is maintained at that speed.
* If the + RES switch is operated momentarily (For approx. 0.5 sec.), the set speed is accelerated in 1.6 km/h (1 mph) steps every time the switch is pressed. Please note that if the switch is pressed when the set speed differs from the vehicle speed by 5 km/h or more, the above operation cannot change the set speed in the memory.
* If the vehicle is being accelerated by depressing the accelerator pedal and the - SET switch is pressed, the set speed will be reset to the vehicle speed at the point at which the switch is released. However when the switch is operated above the high speed limit, the switch operation will have no effect.
- Deceleration
- How to lower the set speed
- The Lower Settable Speed Limit
* This is the lowest speed in the settable range and sets the low speed limit. It is however different from the low speed limit.
* The set speed will not be stored in the memory when driving at or below the lower settable speed limit.
* If the vehicle speed falls below the lower settable speed limit while the - SET switch is being held down, the cruise control will be automatically canceled. It does however keep the stored vehicle speed in the memory in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode but in the constant speed control mode it erases the stored vehicle speed in vehicles for Canada. However, in those for U.S.A., the constant speed control mode does not erase the stored vehicle speed but instead keeps it.
- The Low Speed Limit
This is the lower speed limit in the controllable range and is set at 40km/h. When the vehicle speed falls below 40km/h while driving with the cruise control active, the cruise control will be automatically canceled.
- The Higher Settable Speed Limit
This is the higher speed limit in the settable range and sets the high speed limit.
- The High Speed Limit
This is the higher speed limit while driving with the cruise control in the constant speed control mode and sets the upper speed limit.
- Resume
* If the cruise control is cancelled when the vehicle speed is higher than the low speed limit, pressing the + RES switch causes the vehicle to accelerate back to the speed at which the cruise control was last set.
* Under the follow-up control, when a vehicle ahead has cleared due to the vehicle changing lanes or because the driver's own vehicle has changed lanes, the driver's vehicle will gradually accelerate back up to the set vehicle speed. Pressing and holding the + RES switch increases the acceleration rate.
- Shift-Down Control
* The over-drive may disabled when driving up a hill with the cruise control active. When the hill is judged to have finished (from the throttle opening information) and the over-drive was disabled, the over-drive will resume automatically after the over-drive resume timer expires.
* When driving up a hill with the cruise control active, the gear may be shifted down from the over-drive cut position (8th) to 7th. When the hill is judged to have finished (from the throttle opening information) and the gear has been shifted down to 7th, the gear will return automatically to 8th after the resume timer expires.
- Cancel
The cruise control will be cancelled if any of the following signals are received while driving with the cruise control active.
- Stop light switch comes ON
- CANCEL switch comes ON in the control switch
- ON-OFF switch goes OFF
- VSC/ABS begins to operate
- D position circuit changes from D to M
- When the shift position is D and the transmission gear lower than 3rd gear is selected with the paddleshift controls
- Auto Cancel
- The set vehicle speed will be erased from the memory and the cruise control will be cancelled under the conditions outlined below. Until the ON-OFF switch is turned ON again, the cruise operation indicator will blink and FAIL will be displayed after the master warning light illuminates as well as the warning buzzer sounding. The control will not activate unless the ON-OFF switch is turned ON again.
- If the vehicle speed signal is abnormal
- If the electronic throttle parts are abnormal
- If the stop light switch is disconnected or short-circuits.
- If the radar sensor is abnormal
- If the radar sensor beam axis is not aimed properly.
- If the radar cruising system is abnormal in a situation other than A) and B) above.
- Under the conditions outlined below, the cruise control will be cancelled but the set vehicle speed will be kept in the memory. FAIL will be displayed on the display after the master warning lamp illuminates as well as the warning buzzer sounding. The control will not activate unless the condition ceases or the ON-OFF switch is turned ON again.
- If radar sensor is dirty.
- If the wiper is in high speed operation
- In SNOW mode
- If normal detection is extremely unstable due to bad weather.
- The set vehicle speed will be erased from the memory and the cruise control will be cancelled under the following conditions. The set vehicle speed will be retained in the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode however.
- When the vehicle speed falls below the set vehicle speed minus 16 km/h. (Only in the constant control mode)
- Mode Change Between Constant Speed Control Mode and Vehicle-to-Vehicle Distance Control Mode
Operating the following procedures in the order below changes the control mode.
- Turn ON the ON-OFF switch (The control starts in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode automatically.)
- Hold the cruise control switch lever forward for more than one second without operating the ON-OFF switch.
