Steering Gear

  1. With the vehicle in Neutral, position the vehicle on a hoist.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to STEERING SYSTEM.
  3. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .

  4. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  6. Fill, purge and leak test the system. For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING SYSTEM PURGING  and POWER STEERING SYSTEM FILLING .
  7. Check and, if necessary, adjust the front toe. For additional information, refer toSUSPENSION SYSTEM .

Item 12: Tie-Rod End Removal Note 

  1. Using the special tool, separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.

Item 13: Brake Disc Removal Note 

  1. Rotate the front of the brake rotor outward.

Item 15: Shock Absorber Bolt Removal Note 

  1. On 4x4 vehicles, remove the lower shock absorber bolt.

Item 16: Lower Arm-to-Frame Bolt Removal Note 

  1. On 4x4 vehicles, remove the lower arm-to-frame bolt.

Item 17: Lower Arm Removal Note 

  1. On 4x4 vehicles, pull the lower arm downward to remove the steering gear.

Item 1: Lower Arm-to-Frame Nut Installation Note 

  1. Do not tighten until the installation procedure is complete and the weight of the vehicle is resting on the wheel and tire assemblies.
