Removal and Installation

  1. Remove the upper intake manifold. For additional information, refer to UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  3. Disconnect the fuel line spring lock couplings. For additional information, refer to FUEL TANK & LINES .
  4. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module tube. For additional information, refer to ENGINE EMISSION CONTROL .
  5. Remove the 2 generator bracket nuts, 2 bolts and the bracket.
    • To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  6. Remove the 2 generator bracket studs.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  7. Disconnect the coolant crossover tube and position it aside.
    • Discard the used O-rings.
    • To install, lubricate the new O-rings with Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant VC-7-A (in California and Oregon VC-7-B, in Canada VC-7-C) or equivalent (yellow color) WSS-M97B51-A1.
  8. Disconnect the 4 engine harness retainers from the lower intake manifold.
  9. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure sensor vacuum hose and electrical connector.
  10. Disconnect the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) motor electrical connector.
  11. Disconnect the 8 fuel injector electrical connectors.
  12. NOTE: Replace the intake manifold gaskets if necessary.
  13. Remove the lower intake manifold bolts and the manifold.
    • To install, hand tighten, then tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) in the sequence shown.

  14. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  15. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
