Fuel Tank Draining

WARNING: This procedure involves fuel handling. Be prepared for spillage at all times and always observe fuel handling precautions. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. NOTE: This step will only drain 1/8 of the fuel when tank is full. The fuel pump and transfer pump are below the fuel level when the fuel tank is full. This will prevent fuel spillage when the pumps are removed from the fuel tank.

  4. Insert the special tool into the fuel tank filler pipe until it reaches the fuel tank spout.
  5. Attach the Fuel Storage Tanker to the Fuel Drain Hose and remove any residual fuel in the fuel tank filler pipe.
  6. Remove the rear seat bottom and any insulation padding covering the fuel module and the transfer pump access covers. For additional information, refer to SEATING .
  7. Remove the fuel pump module and fuel transfer pump access covers.

  8. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel transfer pump.

  9. Loosen the right fuel tank support strap approximately one inch.
    • To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

  10. Loosen the left fuel tank support strap approximately one inch.
    • To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

  11. Using the special tool, remove the fuel transfer pump lock ring.

  12. Carefully position the fuel transfer pump aside and using the Fuel Drain Hose and the Fuel Storage Tanker, drain the fuel from the RH side of the fuel tank.

  13. Disconnect the electrical connector on the fuel pump module.

  14. Disconnect the fuel tube quick connect coupling on the fuel pump module. For additional information, refer to QUICK CONNECT COUPLING .

  15. Using the special tool, remove the fuel pump module lock ring.

  16. Carefully position the fuel pump module aside and using the Fuel Drain Hose and the Fuel Storage Tanker, drain the fuel from the LH side of the fuel tank.
