Throttle Position (TP) Sensor - 3.7L Ti-VCT: Removal

NOTE: The Electronic Throttle Body(ETB) gearbox cleanliness is extremely critical. A single particle the size of a grain of sand can restrict the gear train.
NOTE: Make sure the Electronic Throttle Body(ETB) mounting surface is protected from damage throughout this procedure.
  1. Remove the Electronic Throttle Body(ETB). Refer to Fuel Charging and Controls 3-7L Ti-VCT .
  2. NOTE: Clean the area around where the Throttle Position(TP) sensor and the Electronic Throttle Body(ETB) gearbox mate. The purpose is to eliminate the potential introduction of that dirt into the gearbox when opened.

Prior to Throttle Position(TP) sensor removal, clean dirt and debris from the outside of the gearbox using compressed air, shop towel, nylon brush and metal surface cleaner, as necessary.

  3. NOTE: It is acceptable to support the Electronic Throttle Body(ETB) in a vice only if the mounting surfaces are protected from potential damage.

Support the ETB with the cover facing upward. This will prevent the intermediate gear from falling out during disassembly.

  4. NOTE: If a screw breaks and is stuck in the Electronic Throttle Body(ETB), install a new ETB.

Remove and discard the 4 screws while holding the TP sensor in place.

  5. With the TP sensor still in place, use pressurized air to blow loose thread-lock debris out of the mounting holes.

  6. NOTE: Remove the Throttle Position(TP) sensor cover while the over is facing up to prevent intermediate gear from falling out.

    Remove the TP sensor cover.

  7. NOTE: If the intermediate gear is dropped, install a new Electronic Throttle Body(ETB).

Remove the intermediate gear and place it on a clean surface or a lint free cloth. Do not expose to contaminants.

  8. NOTE: Do not apply any cleaning fluids or lubricants in the gearbox.

Use pressurized air to clean out all possible dirt and debris from the gearbox area and the intermediate gear.

  9. NOTE: The new Throttle Position(TP) sensor will have a clip already installed.

Inspect the throttle shaft and remove the TP sensor clip if necessary.
