Reading Trouble Codes
Warm engine to normal operating temperature and turn ignition off. Ensure engine speed is below 4000 RPM while warming up engine. Connect system tester to vehicle. See Figure .
Turn ignition on and listen for tester buzzer (indicating that tester works properly). Tester buzzer should sound for about 3 seconds after ignition is turned on. If a code is displayed, check for cause of fault using instructions outlined under DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
If there is more than one fault in system, the lowest numbered code will be displayed first. If ignition is turned off after a fault has occurred, the malfunction code will not be displayed by tester. Trouble codes are displayed as follows:
- Code 1 : Red lamp of tester will come on for .4 seconds, and go out for 2 seconds, completing one cycle. Cycle will repeat itself until problem is corrected.
- Code 2 : Red lamp of tester will come on for .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on for another .4 seconds, and then go out for 2 seconds. This will complete one cycle. Cycle will repeat itself until problem is corrected.
- Code 3 : Red lamp on tester will come on for .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on for another .4 seconds, and then go out for 2 seconds. This will complete one cycle. Cycle will repeat itself until problem is corrected.
- Code 4 : Red lamp on tester will come on for .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on for another .4 seconds, and then go out for 2 seconds. This will complete one cycle. See Fig 1 . Cycle will repeat itself until problem is corrected.
- Code 5 : Red lamp on tester will come on for 2 seconds, and then go out for 2 seconds, completing one cycle. Cycle will repeat itself until problem is corrected.
- Code 6 : Red lamp on tester will come on for 2 seconds, briefly go out, come on for .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on .4 seconds, briefly go out, come on for another .4 seconds, and then go out for 2 seconds. This will complete one cycle. Cycle will repeat itself until problem is corrected.
