ISSUE & TIP
An engine miss, no start, or surge on acceleration could be caused by a faulty distributor rotor on 1986-89 Mazda 323 and Protege models. Remove the screw from the rotor, then carefully check for a small burn hole near the center of the rotor.
The hole may not be any bigger than the head of a pin, but it will causes the secondary ignition spark to leak to ground through the distributor shaft under certain conditions. Replace the distributor rotor to correct the problem.
