Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

  1. If ECT sensor circuit is open or shorted, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) should set. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES article. If any DTCs are present, repair as necessary. If no DTCs are present, go to next step.
  2. To check ECT sensor, disconnect ECT sensor connector. ECT sensor is located on top right of engine. Check for damaged or pushed out pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Reconnect connector.
  3. Connect New Generation Star (49 T088 0A0) scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) 2. DLC is located under left side of instrument panel, right of steering column. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK menu, and select PCM. Highlight and select PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD.
  4. Using scan tool, access ECT PID and record value. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR SPECIFICATIONS  table. If ECT PID value is not as specified, remove ECT sensor. Place ECT sensor in a container of water with a thermometer and gradually heat water.
  5. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ECT sensor terminals. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR SPECIFICATIONS  table. If resistance is not as specified, replace ECT sensor.
