Pinpoint Test 9: The Generator Is Noisy

PINPOINT TEST 9 - GENERATOR IS NOISY

PINPOINT TEST 9 THE GENERATOR IS NOISY
STEP  INSPECTION  ACTION 
1 CHECK FOR ACCESSORY DRIVE NOISE
  • Check the drive belt for damage and to verify installation.

    See DRIVE BELT SYMPTOM CHART  .

  • Check the accessory mounting brackets for loose bolts or misalignment.
  • Check for a bent generator pulley.
  • Is the accessory drive OK? 
 Yes Go to step 2.
No See DRIVE BELT SYMPTOM CHART  for diagnosis and testing of the accessory drive system.
2 SUBSTITUTE A KNOWN GOOD GENERATOR
  • Key OFF.
  • Install a known good generator.
  • Start the engine.
  • Is the noise present with a known good generator? 
 Yes Install the original generator and check other accessories to find the cause of the noise.
No Replace the generator.

Test the system for normal operation.
