Downloading Data from PCM to GEM

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda Tribute. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
  • This procedure is used if GEM data cannot be retrieved from the original GEM when replacing.
  1. Connect NGS Tester and turn Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  2. Select correct Tribute model in Vehicle Selection (YF is for 14 and AJ is for V6).
  3. Select Diagnostic Data Link and press Trigger.
  4. Select GEM and press Trigger.
  5. Select Function Tests and press Trigger.
  6. Screen displays "Accessory Delay" and "Anti-Theft Perimeter". Select Accessory Delay and press Trigger.
  7. Screen displays "Retrieving module configuration" and then "Accessory Delay as "Enabled or Disabled". Record the status and then press Cancel.
  8. Select Anti-Theft Perimeter and press Trigger.
  9. Screen displays "Retrieving module configuration" and then "Anti-Theft Perimeter" as "Enabled or Disabled". Record the status and then press Cancel twice.
  10. Select Programmable Module Installation and, press Trigger.
  11. Screen displays "Verify ignition is ON and press Trigger. Press Trigger.
  12. Screen displays "Determining GEM protocol" and then the Retrieve/Restore Module Configuration menu. Select Retrieve Module Configuration - Old ECU and press Trigger.
  13. Screen displays warning "Data can only be stored in NGS for 48 hours". If any data was previously stored for a GEM of another vehicle, this data will be lost. Press Trigger to continue.
    NOTE:
    • Horn will honk when Trigger is pressed after the warning.
  14. Screen displays "Finding VID block" followed by "Retrieving VID block". Screen then displays "Running self-test" followed by "The old ECU needs to be installed for this step. If that module does not respond, install a new module. Is the old ECU installed?" Press No (#8 key).
  15. Screen displays "Searching for PCM backup data" and then "Module data has been stored". Press Trigger and the screen displays the Retrieve/Restore Module Configuration menu.
  16. Select Restore Module Configuration - New ECU and press Trigger. Screen displays "Finding VID block" followed by "Retrieving VID block" and "Module data download successful" when finished.
  17. Confirm customer preferences for Accessory Delay and Anti-Theft Perimeter Alarm are properly set. Reset them to previous settings if not correct by pressing Trigger and rotating knob until correct setting appears and then press Trigger again. Press DONE when finished and the screen will display "Please wait" while settings are changed.
  18. Turn Key OFF and disconnect NGS Tester.
  19. Program Keyless Entry transmitters (if needed). Refer to REMOTE TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING .
