Starter Ground Circuit Test

NOTE: Make all voltmeter connections at component terminal rather than at cable or wire end.
  1. Disconnect fuel shutoff switch harness connector. Connect remote starter switch between starter solenoid terminals "S" and "B". See Fig 1 . Connect positive voltmeter lead to starter housing, and negative lead to negative battery post. Engage remote starter switch while observing voltmeter. If greater than 0.2 volt exists, leave test equipment attached and go to next step. If 0.2 volt or less exists, starter ground circuit is okay at this time.
  2. Clean negative cable connections at battery and chassis. Also clean engine ground cable connections at front cover and engine mount bracket. Engage remote starter switch while observing voltmeter. If greater than 0.2 volt exists, leave test equipment attached and go to next step. If 0.2 volt or less exists, starter ground circuit is okay at this time.
  3. Connect voltmeter between negative battery post and engine ground where negative battery cable connects. Engage remote starter switch while observing voltmeter. If greater than 0.2 volt exists, replace negative battery cable. If 0.2 volt or less exists, repair/replace starter as necessary.
