Evaporative Emission Repair Verification Drive Cycle

  1. Drive Cycle Recommendations

Most OBD II monitors will complete more readily using a steady foot driving style during cruise or acceleration modes. Operating throttle in a smooth fashion will minimize time necessary for monitor completion.
  2. Fuel tank level should be between one-half and three-quarters full with three-quarters full being most desirable.
  3. EVAP monitor can only operate during first 30 minutes of engine operation. When executing procedure for this monitor, stay in part throttle mode and drive in a smooth fashion to minimize fuel slosh.
  4. NOTE: For best results, follow each of the following steps as accurately as possible.
NOTE: This step bypasses engine soak timer and resets OBD II monitor status.

  5. Drive Cycle Preparation
Install scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Cycle ignition off, then on. Select appropriate vehicle and engine qualifier. Clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and carry out PCM reset.
  6. Begin to monitor ECT, EVAPDC, FLI (if available) and TP MODE PIDs. Select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK. Select PCM. Select PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD. Press TRIGGER to select each PID, then press START.
  7. Start engine without returning key to OFF position.
  8. WARNING: Strict observance of posted speed limits and attention to driving conditions are mandatory when proceeding through following drive cycle.
NOTE: This step allows engine warm-up and provides Intake Air Temperature (IAT) input to PCM.

  9. Preparation For Monitor Entry
Idle vehicle for 15 seconds. Drive at 40 MPH until ECT is at least 170°F (76.7°C).
  10. If IAT is not above 40°F (4.4°C) and below 100°F (37.8°C), continue with following steps but note that EVAP Monitor Bypass portion of drive cycle (step 13) will be required to bypass EVAP monitor and clear DTC P1000.
  11. NOTE: This step executes heated oxygen sensor (HEGO) monitor.
  12. Cruise at 40 MPH for 60 seconds.
  13. NOTE: This executes EVAP monitor if IAT is above 40°F (4.4°C) and below 100°F (37.8°C).
NOTE: To initiate monitor, TP MODE should equal PT, EVAPDC must be more than 75 percent, and FLI must be 15-85 percent.
NOTE: Avoid sharp turns and hills.
  14. Cruise at 45-65 MPH for 10 minutes.
  15. NOTE: This step executes ISC portion of Secondary Air/CCM.
  16. Bring vehicle to a stop. Idle with transaxle in DRIVE (for automatic transaxle) or NEUTRAL (for manual transaxle) for two minutes.
  17. NOTE: This determines if a pending code is preventing clearing DTC P1000.
If EVAP monitor is not complete and IAT was below 40°F (4.4°C) or above 100°F (37.8°C) temperature range in step 8), or altitude is above 8000 feet, EVAP Monitor Bypass Step  13 must be carried out.

  18. Pending Code Check & EVAP Monitor Bypass Check
Using scan tool, check for pending codes. Conduct normal repair procedures for any pending code concerns. Rerun any incomplete monitor.
  19. NOTE: This allows the bypass counter to increment to two.
NOTE: Do not repeat step 4).

  20. EVAP Monitor Bypass
Park vehicle for a minimum of 8 hours. Repeat steps  512.
