Diagnostic procedure

DTC P0118 - DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA AND DIAGNOSTIC MONITORING TEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN RECORDED 
  • Have FREEZE FRAME DATA and DIAGNOSTIC MONITORING TEST RESULTS (Engine cooling system related) been recorded?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Record FREEZE FRAME DATA and DIAGNOSTIC MONITORING TEST RESULTS on repair order, then go to the next step.
2 VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY 
  • Check for related Service Bulletins and/or on line repair information availability.
  • Is any related repair information available?
Yes Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
  • If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
3 VERIFY CURRENT INPUT SIGNAL STATUS-IS CONCERN INTERMITTENT OR CONSTANT  Yes Go to the next step.
No Intermittent concern exists. Go to INTERMITTENT CONCERNS TROUBLESHOOTING procedure.

4 INSPECT POOR CONNECTION OF ECT SENSOR CONNECTOR 
  • Turn the ignition switch off.
  • Disconnect ECT sensor connector.
  • Check for poor connection (damaged, pulled-out pins, corrosion, etc.).
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step.
5 CLASSIFY ECT SENSOR OR HARNESS MALFUNCTION 
  • Connect jumper wire between ECT sensor terminals A and B (harness-side)
  • Measure voltage at breakout box terminal 41.
  • Is voltage approx. 0 V? 
Yes Replace ECT sensor, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step.
6 INSPECT ECT SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER 
  • Turn key to ON (Engine off).
  • Measure voltage between ECT sensor terminal A (harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is voltage B+? 
Yes Repair or replace harness for short to power, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step.
7 INSPECT POOR CONNECTION OF PCM CONNECTOR 
  • Disconnect PCM connector.
  • Check for poor connection (damaged, pulled-out pins, corrosion, etc.).
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step.
8 INSPECT ECT SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN 
  • Connect breakout box with PCM disconnected.
  • Check continuity between ECT sensor terminal A (harness-side) and breakout box terminal 41.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace harness for open, then go to Step 10.
9 INSPECT ECT SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN 
  • Check continuity between ECT sensor terminal B (harness-side) and breakout box terminal 20.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace harness for open, then go to the next step.
10 VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTC P0118 COMPLETED 
  • Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
  • Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the WDS or equivalent.
  • Turn key to ON (Engine off).
  • Is same DTC present?
Yes Replace PCM, then go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
11 VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE  Yes Go to the applicable DTC inspection.

No Troubleshooting completed.
