Symptom Troubleshooting Chart - Engine

SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - ENGINE

Problem Possible Cause Action
Difficult to start during hot or cold start
  • Piston ring(s) worn, damaged, sticking or worn piston/cylinder.
  • Head gasket damaged.
  • Fuel system damaged or inoperative.
  • Ignition system inoperative.
Poor idling
  • Restricted exhaust system.
  • Vacuum leak.
  • Burned valve(s).
  • Incorrect valve to valve seat contact.
  • Head gasket damaged.
  • Fuel system damaged or inoperative.
  • Damaged cooling system.
Insufficient power
  • Compression leakage from valve seat.
  • Valve sticking.
  • Valve spring weak or broken.
  • Head gasket damaged.
  • Cylinder head cracked or distorted.
  • Piston ring(s) worn, damaged or sticking.
  • Fuel system damaged or inoperative.
  • Brakes dragging.
  • Restricted exhaust system.
  • INSPECT the valve or valve seat.
  • INSPECT valve stem to valve guide clearance or carbon accumulation.
  • INSPECT the valve spring.
  • INSPECT the head gasket.
  • INSPECT the cylinder head.
  • INSTALL a new short block.
  • See FUEL SYSTEM .

  • INSPECT the exhaust system.
Excessive or insufficient compression
  • Valve(s) burnt or sticking.
  • Valve spring(s) weak or broken.
  • Piston ring(s) worn, damaged, sticking or worn piston/cylinder.
  • Head gasket damaged.
  • Carbon accumulation in combustion chamber.
  • Fuel system damaged or inoperative.
  • INSPECT the valve(s).
  • INSPECT the valve spring(s).
  • INSTALL a new short block.
  • INSPECT the head gasket.
  • ELIMINATE carbon build up.
  • See FUEL SYSTEM .
Excessive oil consumption
  • Piston ring(s) worn, damaged, sticking or worn piston/cylinder.
  • Valve stem seal worn or missing.
  • Oil leakage.
  • Valve stem or valve guide worn.
  • Incorrect oil viscosity.
  • Diluted oil.
  • Crankcase overfilled.
  • Incorrect oil pressure.
  • INSTALL a new short block.
  • INSPECT the valve or valve stem seal.
  • REPAIR oil leakage.
  • INSPECT the valve stem or valve guide.
  • DRAIN and FILL with new oil.
  • CHECK oil dilution. DRAIN and FILL as necessary.
  • CHECK and adjust the oil level.
  • CHECK the oil pressure. REPAIR as necessary.
Engine noise
  • Excessive crankshaft main bearing clearance.
  • Excessive crankshaft end play.
  • Excessive connecting rod bearing oil clearance.
  • Piston/cylinder worn.
  • Piston ring damaged.
  • Connecting rod bent.
  • Valve spring(s) broken.
  • Excessive valve guide clearance.
  • Cooling system inoperative (water pump, vibration of radiator).
  • Fuel system inoperative.
  • Excessive carbon buildup.
  • Exhaust gas leakage.
  • Incorrect drive belt tension.
  • Generator front bearing worn.
Tappet noise, engine running
  • Incorrect tappet clearance.
  • CHECK and ADJUST the tappet clearance as necessary.
