Windshield Glass: Installation

CAUTION:
  • When installing urethane-installed glass parts, the vehicle must not be driven until the urethane has cured. Adequate cure time is specified on the drive away chart for each urethane product as the temperatures and humidity vary. Inadequate or incorrect curing can adversely affect the retention of the windshield.
  1. Dry fit the windshield glass and center it on the setting blocks (if equipped). Make alignment marks with tape or non-staining grease pencil on both the glass and vehicle body.

    CAUTION:
    • Care must be taken to avoid scratching the pinch weld.
  2. Trim the remaining urethane on the pinch weld.
    • The existing urethane surface should be smooth and free from cuts and contamination.
  3. If reinstalling the original windshield glass, remove excess urethane from the windshield glass.
  4. Clean the inside of the glass surface with an alcohol-free cleaner, making sure the ceramic area is clean.
    CAUTION:
    • Be sure to use the same brand and cure-rate products for the adhesive and primer. Do not mix different brands of urethane and primer.
    NOTE:
    • Sika uses the same black primer for the glass and pinch weld area.
  5. If installing a new windshield glass, apply urethane glass primer according to manufacturer's instructions. Allow at least 6 minutes to dry.

    NOTE:
    • Use either a high-ratio, electric or battery-operated caulk gun that will apply the urethane with less effort and a continuous bead.
  7. Apply urethane adhesive on top of the existing trimmed urethane adhesive bead on the pinch weld. Make sure that all gaps in the urethane adhesive are smoothed into one continuous bead starting and ending at the bottom of the windshield near the center.
    CAUTION:
    • Open a window to prevent the windshield glass from being pushed out by air pressure if a door is closed.
  8. Position the windshield glass, aligning the marks made previously.
  9. Remove any excess urethane adhesive from the outside surface of the windshield glass.
  10. Check the installation for air and water leaks through the urethane bond and add urethane adhesive where needed.
  11. Install the A-pillar trim panel. See 09-17 A-PILLAR TRIM PANEL .
  12. Install the interior rear view mirror. See INTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR  .
