Oil Temperature Switch

  1. Check oil temperature switch when engine is idling at operating temperature, and transmission is in Park or Neutral. Disconnect wire from oil temperature switch and connect to ground. If idle speed increases to about 850 RPM go to step 3). If speed does not change, check for continuity between electronic control unit (ECU) and oil temperature switch.
  2. If wiring between ECU and oil temperature switch is good, replace ECU.
  3. Oil temperature switch contact should be closed below 60°F (16°C) . Oil temperature switch should be open above 60°F (16°C). Replace switch if it does not meet specifications.
NOTE: If engine idle speed is to high when engine is warm. Disconnect Oil Temperature Switch wire and do not ground. Check system as in steps 2) and 3) above.
