ETR control module with airbag - function - GF91.60-P-4006-04C

Model 163 Applicable as of 12/99

The restraint systems control module (N2/7)  records via the integrated acceleration sensors

Apart from this the control module also records:

As of 1.09.01:

The restraint systems control module (N2/7)  links all recorded signals and based on the vehicle data stored in the control module it decides which airbag / side airbag and ETR units are to be deployed, in order to ensure that the occupants enjoy the greatest degree of safety.

As of 1.09.01:

The side airbags are used to deploy the window airbags on the corresponding side of the vehicle.

An additional safety sensor  is integrated in the control module to protect against false deployments in normal vehicle operation, e. g. due to EMC influences  . This sensor is a mechanical switch, which is closed in the event of a crash in the longitudinal direction. This closed switch enables the ignition current to flow to the driver and front passenger airbags in the event of a crash.

The mechanical safety sensor is not integrated into the ETR ignition circuit. Its switching state however is interrogated by the restraint systems control module (N2/7)  before the ETR is deployed. Only where the safety sensor is actually activated because of a deceleration are the ETRs deployed.

Up to 31.08.01

In the event of side collisions, the safety sensor remains without function. Here, additional safety against erroneous activation is provided by a plausibility check performed in the control module.

As of 1.09.01:  activated in the event of a side collision of the left side airbag and window airbag sensor (A53/1)  or right side airbag and window airbag sensor (A54/1)  whereupon the restraint systems control module (N2/7)  deploys the corresponding side airbag and window airbag units.
