Draining & Refilling

NOTE: Manufacturer has deleted the torque converter drain plug. Due to production breaks, some models may have a torque converter drain plug.
  1. If necessary to service transmission fluid, rotate engine until torque converter drain plug is accessible. Remove torque converter drain plug, and drain fluid. Remove transmission oil pan drain plug and drain fluid.
  2. Install drain plugs with new gaskets as necessary. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Using a screwdriver, remove locking pin from transmission tube cap. Remove transmission tube cap. Add about 5.3 qts. (5.0L) of transmission fluid. Start engine and let idle.
  3. With vehicle on a level surface, use Dipstick (140 589 15 21 00) to check transmission oil level. Insert dipstick. Place selector lever in Park and set parking brake. Allow engine to idle. Shift transmission through all gears ending in Park. If transmission is cold, with transmission oil temperature about 86°F (30°C), oil level should be between minimum and maximum marks for cold reading (lower scale on dipstick).
  4. If transmission is warm, with transmission oil temperature about 176°F (80°C), oil level should be between minimum and maximum marks for warm reading (upper scale on dipstick). Measure fluid level with dipstick completely inserted. If necessary to add transmission fluid, add fluid with engine idling. DO NOT overfill. If transmission oil pan bolts were removed for servicing filter, see TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
