Hybrid inflator for window airbag

Fig 1: Identifying Hybrid Inflator Window Airbag Components

In the event of a side-collision collision or in the event of an angled collision and if the triggering threshold is exceeded, the left window airbag/right window airbag  deploys at the same time as the front left side airbag/front right side airbag  and the rear left side airbag/rear right side airbag (except Model 203.7 and Model 168).

The window airbag units are fitted with hybrid inflators  .

Hybrid inflators provide the following advantages compared to standard inflators:

Operational sequence

  1. The restraint systems control module (N2/7)  sends an ignition pulse to the initiator in the hybrid inflator.
  2. The solid propellant in the propellant chamber (1) is ignited by the initiator, which is burning off.
  3. An overpressure builds up in the propellant chamber.
  4. This pressure accelerates the spike (5) in the direction of the bursting diaphragm (6).
  5. The bursting diaphragm (6) of the pressure vessel (2) breaks.
  6. The compressed inert gas mixture can escape from the pressure vessel through the discharge ports (4).
  7. The gas flowing out is guided at a high pressure in the air hose folded and stored in the roof frame. The air hose, which is now inflating, tears open the inner paneling at the side roof frame and penetrates into the passenger compartment.
  8. The air hose reaches its full volume within approximately 25 ms  This volume remains for approx. 3 to 5 s  , ensuring that the protective effect is retained for a sufficiently long period also in the event of subsequent rollovers.
  9. Then the pressure begins to drop. The gas escapes from the airbag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
