General Information On Chassis Alignment: Notes

CAUTION: If equipped, disable power memory seats and steering wheel, damage to seat or steering wheel may result if steering wheel holder or brake pedal winch is in place and memory position goes into motion. Refer to owners manual.
NOTE: Diagnosis of vehicles equipped with Active Body Control (ABC) requires the use of Mercedes-Benz "STAR DIAGNOSIS" compact PC (6511 1801 00). See instrument manufacturer for tool usage.
NOTE: Prior to performing wheel alignment, perform preliminary visual and mechanical inspection of wheels, tires and suspension components, correct any faults as needed.
NOTE: During procedures number(s) and letter(s) in parentheses correspond to number(s) and letter(s) inside the illustration(s). The word arrow(s) in parentheses is used to point out specific components or movement.
  1. Drive vehicle onto electronic alignment system and continue as follows:
    1. Vehicle Without Active Body Control (ABC) -  Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position. Unlock rotary and sliding plates. Install brake pedal winch on brake. See Figure . Attach measuring heads to each wheel. Perform initial measurement. Check riding height (vehicle level) at front and rear axle and adjust if necessary. See RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENTS  .
    2. Vehicle With Active Body Control (ABC) -  Activate (raise) the Active Body Control (ABC) with the switch on center console (indicator lights are ON). Deactivate (lower) Active Body Control (indicator lights are OFF). Place transmission in PARK, roll down driver's window, remove key from ignition, open door and exit vehicle. Install brake pedal winch on brake. See Figure . Attach measuring heads to each wheel. Perform initial measurement. DO NOT load vehicle again until riding height (vehicle level) is checked. Check riding height at front and rear axle and adjust if necessary. See RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENTS  .
  2. Perform alignment procedure as follows:
    • Perform initial measurements.
    • Check front and rear riding height (vehicle level). See RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENTS  . Make adjustments if necessary.
    • Check and adjust rear axle toe-in.
    • Check and adjust camber and caster on front axle. If rear axle camber is not within specification, problem may be caused by too great a difference in riding height (vehicle level) between left and right side of vehicle or accident damage. If vehicle was damaged in an accident, toe-in may be out of specification also.
    • Check and adjust front axle toe-in.
  3. Remove measuring heads and brake pedal winch. Test drive vehicle.
