  Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

NOTES
Insulate ground line of battery.
Otherwise the disconnected ground line may accidentally come into contact with the ground point of the battery.
IMPORTANT Do not connect no-load current retention unit.

3.1 Remove catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter Vehicles with catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter.

3.2 Remove catalytic converter Vehicles with catalytic converter.

3.3 Remove the diesel particulate filter Vehicle with diesel particulate filter.

4 Remove screws/bolts (8) Model 166 with engine 651
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, shield to exhaust manifold

5 Remove heat shield (7) on exhaust manifold (9) Model 166 with engine 651  
6 Unscrew screws (2, 3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, heat shield to engine support *BA22.10-P-1003-02A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Heat shield on starter *BA15.30-P-1004-01P 
7 Unfasten heat shield (1) at retaining clamp and remove    
8 Detach contact protection, unscrew nut (5) and remove circuit 30 electric line (13) from starter (M1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, connection for circuit 30 *BA15.30-P-1002-01P 
9 Unscrew nut (4) and remove circuit 50 electric line (14) from starter (M1) INSTALLATION NOTES
Route circuit 50 electric line (14) between starter (M1) and crankcase.
Otherwise, the circuit 50 electric line (14) will chafe against the heat shield (1).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, circuit 50 connection

10 Remove screws/bolts (10, 12) and take off rear support brace (11) for exhaust gas turbocharger IMPORTANT Only in vehicles with sequential turbocharging.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, bracket for rear/center exhaust gas turbocharger to crankcase

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, turbocharger bracket to rear/center to turbocharger *BA09.40-P-1002-01P 
11 Remove bolts (6) IMPORTANT When loosening upper screw/bolt (6) a suitable extension should be led at and past the rear engine mount over the transmission to the upper screw/bolt (6) in order to ease removal.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, starter to major assembly carrier/crankcase

12 Remove starter (M1) from below    
13 Check pinion of starter (M1) for damage and wear When reusing the starter (M1).
If damaged or worn
Replace starter (M1).
 
14 Check starter ring gear at flywheel/drive plate for wear and damage If damaged or worn

Replace flywheel/drive plate.

15 Install in the reverse order
