The electric machine can operate as a motor or as an alternator. The combustion engine operates on the drivetrain and delivers energy for driving or energy for charging the high-voltage battery. Various operating statuses result from these possibilities, each with a different energy flow.
Energy also flows via the service line/charging station when charging the high-voltage battery.
The driver receives information on the energy flow and on the charge level of the high-voltage battery via the central display. In the energy flow display, the active components of the hybrid system are highlighted. The energy flow between the individual components is shown on color.
In the following chapters, the energy flow for the respective operating status will be explained by means of the depiction in the central display.
The percentage next to the battery symbol shows the current charge level of the high-voltage battery.
Operational (Ready) with combustion engine (vehicle stationary, combustion engine in idle), sample illustration
In the case of a stationary vehicle, the combustion engine is running in idle. No energy flow is present in the drivetrain.
Operational readiness is also possible in the case of a switched off combustion engine, but not shown here.
Generator mode when stationary (Charge) (vehicle stationary, combustion engine running, electric machine works as a generator), sample illustration
When the vehicle is stationary, the combustion engine runs and delivers mechanical energy to the electric machine. The electric machine operates as an alternator and converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. This is stored in the high-voltage battery via the power electronics control unit. This operating status is only set in the case of a critical status of the on-board electrical system.
Operating status only with combustion engine, example illustration
The energy flow occurs from the combustion engine to the driven axles.
Generator mode when driving (Drive & charge) (electric machine works as a generator), sample illustration
The energy flow takes place from the combustion engine to the driven axles and additionally to the electric machine. The electric machine operates as an alternator and converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. This is stored in the high-voltage battery via the power electronics control unit. This operating status is only set in the case of a critical status of the on-board electrical system.
Boost mode during hybrid driving (combustion engine running, electric machine works as a motor), sample illustration
The energy flow takes place both from the combustion engine and from the electric machine to the driven axles.
The high-voltage battery supplies the electric machine with electrical energy via the power electronics control unit. The electric machine operates as an engine and generates a torque, which supports the torque of the combustion engine in operating on the drivetrain and the driven axles.
Recuperation during hybrid driving (combustion engine running, electric machine works as a generator), sample illustration
The energy flow occurs from the driven axles to the electric machine.
The combustion engine is in decel mode.
The kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into electrical energy by the electric machine. This is stored in the high-voltage battery via the power electronics control unit. If this status lasts for a longer period, the combustion engine is automatically switched off.
Recuperation during electric driving (electric machine works as a generator), sample illustration
The energy flow occurs from the driven axles to the electric machine. The combustion engine is OFF and the engine separator clutch is open.
The kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into electrical energy by the electric machine. This is stored in the high-voltage battery via the power electronics control unit.
Electric-only driving (E-drive) (combustion engine OFF, electric machine works as a motor), sample illustration
The energy flow takes place from the electric machine to the driven axles.
The high-voltage battery supplies the electric machine with electrical energy via the power electronics control unit. The electric machine operates as an engine and generates a torque, which operates on the drivetrain and the driven axles.
Glide mode, example illustration
In Glide mode, the combustion engine and electric machine do not generate any effective torque. No energy flow is present in the drivetrain.
Charging via the service line/charging station, sample illustration
The vehicle plug is plugged in for a stationary vehicle, the high-voltage battery is being charged. No energy flow is present in the drivetrain.
Vehicle plugged in without charging, sample illustration
It is detected that the vehicle plug is plugged in; the high-voltage battery is however not being charged. No energy flow is present in the drivetrain.
