The general operating principle of the hybrid system is explained in the following.

General

To generate the drive torque, one of the following is used:

In hybrid mode, the electric machine and combustion engine work together on the powertrain, which aggregates the torques of the individual drives.

The electric machine generates either an engine-generated torque or works as an alternator in recuperation.

The control of the hybrid system comprises the control of the combustion engines and the control of the power electronics control unit with the electric machine. The master control unit is thus the powertrain control unit, which contains the aggregate coordinator and thus coordinates all torques in the hybrid system. The top objective of the control is the lowest possible fuel consumption.

The energy management also takes place through the powertrain control unit.

The powertrain control unit determines the required output of the electric drive from the relevant vehicle data and requests this from the power electronics control unit. The power electronics control unit actuates the electric machine with 3-phase alternating voltage over the integrated power inverter and monitors the electric machine concerning its temperature and generated drive torque. The electric machine transfers the drive torque directly to the drive shaft.

The electric machine correlates the required energy during engine operation via the high-voltage on-board electrical system of the high-voltage battery. Charging of the high-voltage battery takes place while driving in overrun mode, when the electric machine works as an alternator. For plug-in hybrids, stationary charging is also possible by connecting an external power source.

To protect the electric drive from overheating, the power electronics control unit is cooled.

The driver receives information about the energy flow in the drivetrain and information about the charge level of the high-voltage battery via the multifunction display.

IMPORTANT We will not go into further detail here about internal function sequences of the combustion engine, automatic transmission, regenerative brake system, 12 V on-board electrical system, and the high-voltage on-board electrical system.

IMPORTANT During recuperative braking, the total braking torque requested by the driver is divided into one part of the braking torque to be implemented by the electric machine (recuperative) and one to be implemented by the service brake.
