Overview
This document contains information on:
- General
- Alternatively driven vehicle versions
General
Alternative drives differ from conventional drives with regard to the energy sources they use or with regard to the use of electrical drive components. The objective of alternative drive concepts is to reduce or completely prevent the consumption of fossil fuels and the resulting environmental pollution. A high-voltage on-board electrical system allows the electric machine to be operated for the electric drive.
Alternatively driven vehicle versions
- Hybrid vehicle
The hybrid vehicle is a hybrid of conventional and electrical drive components. Fossil fuel is used as the energy source. The high-voltage battery is used as an additional energy source in the plug-in hybrid.
- Electric vehicle with battery storage
The electric machine provides the drive. Or, in the case of all-wheel drive, two electric machines provide the drive. The high-voltage battery is used as the energy source.
- Fuel cell vehicle
The drive occurs using the electric machine. Hydrogen is used as the energy source. A fuel cell converts the chemical energy stored in the hydrogen into electrical energy.
