Speed Adjustment, Basic Function - GF30.30-P-9900A

Model All (CAR) with code 546 (Automatic speed control)

Overview

This document contains the following information:

General

The speed adaptation system detects speed limits and forwards these to the speed or distance control system. On adoption of a speed limit, the vehicle automatically adapts its speed to the speed limit. It does not have to be regulated manually. Speed adaptation is operated using the multimedia system.

Function requirements

Function

Speed adaptation with speed limitation

The speed limits are adopted by the traffic sign recognition system or derived from the navigation system information. This enables foresighted speed control, e.g. when entering localities.

When speed or distance control is active, detected speed limits can be adopted as the new specified speed. Speed limits that are higher than the set specified speed can also be adopted.

When distance control is active, speed limits that are lower than the speed at which one's own vehicle is following the preceding one can be adopted. Distance control then switches to speed control.

Valid recommended speeds (e.g. on freeway) can also be taken over as the specified speed. This can also be set by the driver each time the ignition is switched on.

Speed adaptation usually takes place ahead of the area in which the speed limit is valid, but at the latest when noticed by the traffic sign recognition system. When approaching a built-up area, the speed is adapted before the area is reached. The speed limit display only changes on entering the built-up area.

Route-based speed adaptation

When distance control is active, one's own speed is adapted to a route event ahead. Route-based speed adaptation can be configured in the multimedia system.

Route events ahead include:

Depending on the selected drive program, the route event ahead is driven in a fuel-/energy-efficient, comfortable or dynamic manner. Once the route event has been passed, the vehicle accelerates again to the stored specified speed. The set distance, detected preceding vehicles, and speed limits ahead are taken into consideration. Thanks to the speed adaptation, the driver has more time to assess the situations, for example, at roundabouts, intersections and ends of tailbacks (as of market launch model 167).

The route events are stored in the navigation system's map data. Target speeds are assigned to the route events to adapt the vehicle speed. If the passed route event is immediately followed by the next, the vehicle speed is adapted accordingly.

Speed adaptation is stopped if the turn signal indicator is switched off ahead of the route event or if the driver actuates the accelerator or brake pedal during the process.

When turning off or ahead of exits, the vehicle speed is adapted irrespective of the navigation system's activation status on switching on the turn signal indicator. On multi-lane roads, a greater distinction is made between exits and turning off. When the turn signal indicator for the right-hand lane is switched on, the speed is adapted immediately. On other lanes, the speed is adapted after a delay (lane change assumption).

Route-based speed adaptation does not give consideration to any right of way regulation. The driver must always give consideration to the German Road Traffic Regulations. In difficult ambient conditions, the speed must be adapted by the driver. Difficult ambient conditions may be:
