Remove/Install Ignition Coils - AR15.12-P-2003MSA

Engine 256.9 in model 213, 238, 257, 290

CAUTION Risk of injury  to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing engine oil Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Do not fill engine oil into beverage containers.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmitter range (min. 2 m).    
2 Remove engine air intake duct downstream of air filter. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not install the upper engine cover until an engine test run has been performed. AR09.10-P-8130MSA
3 Remove front noise insulation.    
4 Remove bleed line at oil separator and seal openings with suitable stop plugs. SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 3
5 Remove rear noise insulation.    
6 Release and disconnect electrical connectors of ignition coils (T1/1 to T1/6).    
7 Remove screws/bolts (2). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, ignition coil to cylinder head cover *BA15.10-P-1001-04A

8 Detach ignition coils (T1/1 to T1/6) with spark plug connectors (3) upwards and remove. INSTALLATION NOTES Apply spark plug connector grease in spark plug connectors (3) before installation to reduce withdrawal and insertion forces. Otherwise damage will occur.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Apply approx. 1 g of spark plug connector grease in spark plug connectors (3).
 
    Spark plug connector grease *BR00.45-Z-1102-06A 
9 Check ignition coils (T1/1 to T1/6) for external damage. If damage is present:

Replace corresponding ignition coil (T1/1 to T1/6).
 
10 Install in the reverse order.    
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
11 Perform an engine test run and check the engine for proper function.    
12 Install upper engine cover.   AR01.10-P-2405MSA
