Remove/Install Starter - AR15.30-P-7100MNM

Engine 177 in model 217, 222

CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Deburr repair panels.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Deactivate easy entry and exit feature for steering wheel    
2 Turn complete wheels on front axle to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device NOTES Do not turn steering wheel with steering coupling removed.
Otherwise, the clock spring contact will be destroyed.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Retainer device Fig 3
3 Disconnect battery ground line   AR54.10-P-0003LF
4 Remove steering coupling from steering shaft and place steering coupling to one side Engine 177 in model 217, 222 as of 4/30/14 AR46.10-P-8000LW
5 Remove contact protection of circuit 30 electric line (4)    
6 Unclip circuit 30 electric line (4) from bracket (5)    
7 Unscrew nut (2) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, connection for terminal designation 30 *BA15.30-P-1004-01T 
8 Unscrew nut (1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, connection for terminal designation 50 *BA15.30-P-1003-01T 
9 Disconnect circuit 30 electric line (4) on starter (M1)    
10 Disconnect circuit 50 electric line (3) on starter (M1)    
11 Remove sheet metal (7) TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 X 1 *BA00.10-P-1002-04A 
12 Remove screw/bolt (8) TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 X 1 *BA00.10-P-1002-04A 
13 Lift bracket (5) and unscrew screws/bolts (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, starter to crankcase and transmission *BA15.30-P-1001-01T 
14 Remove starter (M1) downwards    
15 Check pinion on the starter (M1) for wear and damage When reusing the starter (M1).
If wear or damage present

Replace starter (M1).
 
16 Remove front lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105LF
17 Turn engine at center bolt of crankshaft and check starter ring gear on flywheel for damage   AR03.30-P-8002MNM
    SPECIAL TOOL Ring wrench
If wear or damage present

Replace flywheel.

18 Install in the reverse order    
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
19 Perform engine test run and check starter (M1 for proper operation
