Continuous Testing
NOTE:
Service codes are lost when ignition key is turned off.
- Turn ignition key off. Disconnect grounded jumper wire from self test input. Perform this test once with key on/engine off and then repeat test with engine running. If engine stalls, DO NOT turn key off or codes will be lost. Wiggle, move and twist the wiring harness. Tap and/or shake sensors. Operate sensors through full range of normal operation (start with cold engine and test until operating temperature is reached, operate throttle from closed to W.O.T., etc.).
- Observe voltmeter while performing test. If a needle deflection occurs, an intermittent open or short has occurred in one of the sensor circuits. After performing test, the intermittent problems will be stored in the memory as service codes. DO NOT
turn key off. Reconnect grounded jumper wire to self test input. Observe and record service codes.NOTE: Continuous test can only be run once without turning ignition key off. DO NOT miss reading any of the service codes.
- Vehicle may be operated with voltmeter connected to verify that intermittent problem is stored by computer when symptom occurs. If voltmeter deflects, DO NOT turn ignition key off. Reconnect grounded jumper wire to self test input and display codes.
- Check circuit(s) indicated by codes for shorted or open circuits. Disassemble the associated harness connector and check for proper terminal connection. If no problem is found, repeat Continuous Test while shaking and moving the harness. If problem still cannot be isolated, substitute the affected sensor and retest. If fault is still present, substitute ECA and retest using original sensor.
- If code 41 or 42 is displayed as an intermittent problem, all non-electrical sources of fuel mixture problems should be eliminated before testing for an intermittent electrical problem.
