Diagnostic Sub-Routines
- Vehicle Preparation & Equipment Hookup
Apply parking brake. Place shift lever firmly in Park (Neutral on M/T) position. Block drive wheels. Turn off all electrical loads. Connect test equipment to Data Link connector to perform Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test. - Perform KOEO Self-Test
Start engine and warm engine to normal operating temperature. If engine does not start or stalls, perform KOEO Self-Test. See KOEO SELF-TEST in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. - On 4.9L M/T vehicles, depress clutch pedal during entire test. On 7.3L diesel engine vehicles, depress throttle during entire test.
- On all models, turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Activate KOEO Self-Test. Record all KOEO and continuous memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). Turn ignition off. If DTC 11 or 111 (11/111-10-any continuous memory code) is present, go to next step. If any other DTC code is present, perform appropriate CIRCUIT TEST in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
- Base Timing
Turn ignition off. Place transmission in Park or Neutral. Turn off all electrical loads. Disconnect in-line Spark Output (SPOUT) connector. Start engine (DO NOT use a remote starter). - If engine experiences a no-start condition, reconnect SPOUT connector and check ignition system. If engine stalls with SPOUT connector unplugged, reconnect SPOUT connector and go to CIRCUIT TEST S, step 2) in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
- If either of these conditions does not occur, check base timing as follows:
- Place transmission in Park or Neutral. Ensure A/C and/or heater system is off. Connect timing light and tachometer to engine.
- Disconnect single-wire SPOUT connector or remove shorting bar from double-wire SPOUT connector. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. With engine at base timing RPM, check initial (base) timing.
- Reconnect single-wire SPOUT connector or shorting bar from double-wire SPOUT connector. Check ignition timing advance to verify distributor is advancing beyond initial setting. Disconnect test equipment.
NOTE: Electronic Ignition (EI) low data rate and high data rate systems cannot be adjusted. Check Camshaft Driven (CMP) Hall sensor, synchronizer sensor orientation, timing belt/chain, etc. - If base timing is not within 2 degrees of specification (usually 10 degrees) on emission label, adjust timing as necessary. If unable to adjust timing to specification, check engine mechanical condition (distributor orientation, timing belt/chain, etc.). If base timing is within 2 degrees of specification on emission label, go to next step.
- PCM Control Of Timing
With engine off, disconnect in-line SPOUT connector. To verify Powertrain Control Module (PCM) control of timing, start engine and let it idle. Reconnect in-line SPOUT connector and observe timing. If timing changes when SPOUT is reconnected, go to step 11 . - If timing DOES NOT change when SPOUT is reconnected, go to next step and check for DTC 213/18. Ignore all other engine running DTC. If DTC 213/18 is present, perform appropriate CIRCUIT TEST in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. If DTC 213/18 is not present, proceed as directed by next step.
- Perform KOER Self-Test
Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Turn engine off. Activate Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test and start engine. See KOER SELF-TEST in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. - If engine stalls during KOER Self-Test, go to CIRCUIT TEST S, step 2) in appropriate TESTS W/CODES
article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. If engine does not stall, record all service codes displayed. If DTC 11 or 111 is present, go to next step. If any other DTC code is present, perform appropriate CIRCUIT TEST in appropriate TESTS W/CODES
article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.NOTE: Engine running DTC 98/998 indicates vehicle is in Failure Mode Effects Management (FMEM) mode. KOER Self-Test cannot be performed. Perform appropriate CIRCUIT TEST in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
- Continuous Memory DTC
If continuous memory DTC (11/111-10-11/111) was displayed during KOER Self-Test, return to diagnostic routine symptom(s). If any other continuous memory DTC is present, perform appropriate CIRCUIT TEST in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. - Vehicle Preparation & Equipment Hookup
