Passive Anti-Theft System Module: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2002 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges. Proper grounding of technician and workplace is essential to prevent damage.
CAUTION: Before replacing any control module, ensure all module ground and power circuits are functioning properly. For circuit identification, see GROUND DISTRIBUTIONGROUND DISTRIBUTION and POWER DISTRIBUTIONPOWER DISTRIBUTION in WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
CAUTION: Before removal of Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) module, module configuration information must be uploaded to Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester or other scan tool. New PATS module must be programmed with this configuration information. See PROGRAMMABLE MODULE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE under CONTROL MODULE PROGRAMING under FORD MOTOR CO. in COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
NOTE: Prior to starting vehicle, check for PATS Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If DTC is found, perform appropriate pinpoint test.
NOTE: When PATS module is replaced, both ignition keys must be relearned and stored in memory. Insert each key in ignition and turn to RUN position for automatic programming.
NOTE: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
